I grew up in the Palm Springs area of CA and set my goal early in high school of going to the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona (bear down!). Flash forward to 2012, I was accepted, and enrolled as a full time student. I applied as a psychology major but changed it to Elementary Education before the school year even started because I did not want to go to med school. It was at U of A that I joined a sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and met some of my favorite people in the entire world (shout out to the homies). I truly felt like I had finally found my place and it was the best 4 years of my life (so far). I graduated with a BA in Elementary Education with an emphasis in English Language Learning as well as my AZ Teaching Credential in 2016.
After graduating I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona and taught 4th grade at a Title 1 school for 2 years. If you know anything about Title 1 schools, my school had a 99% free and reduced lunch rate and was such a rewarding experience. It was during this time that I lived with my teacher bestie, Lauren (@learningwithlauren)! During my second year teaching, I started my masters program and enrolled in an online Master of Science Curriculum & Instruction program through Western Governors University. After making it through the Red for Ed movement of teacher strikes in 2018, I decided to move back to California to try and optimize my earning potential.
When moving back to CA in 2018, I accepted a 3rd grade teaching position at a charter school in my dream location (wine country). It was here that I discovered how AMAZING 3rd grade is and how much I love it.
From 2019-2021, I took a brief hiatus from teaching to try out the business world and finish my masters degree. I was a little burnt out after 3 difficult years of teaching and was always curious if the grass really was greener on the other side (it’s not btw). I finally finished my MS degree in May 2020 in the midst of the pandemic and by this time I had figured out that I not only wanted, but NEEDED, to get back into teaching because I missed it so much. CA was on a hiring freeze so I moved back to AZ for 6 months to teach in a DLI program and then moved back to CA when I was able to get my previous position again!
FINALLY bringing you to present day, I am currently teaching third grade at the same charter school in CA and honestly, life couldn’t be better at the moment.
Do we have anything in common? I’d love to get to know you! Message me on Instagram @teachwinerepeat or write it below.
